When Good Things Happen To Awesome People of the Day: When he put his Rolex for sale on eBay, Bob didn’t expect it to sell for much more than what he had originally paid when he picked it up at a Navy Exchange on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands some 52 years ago: $70.
But his opening bid of $9.95 didn’t stand still for long once potential buyers realized what the avid diver was actually selling: A genuine Rolex Submariner Ref 5510, AKA the much sought-after watch worn by Sean Connery in his iconic role as James Bond.
Not knowing any better, Bob thought it was a mistake, but the bids kept climbing. When the auction closed a few days later the final selling price was a whopping $66,100. Asked if he had second thoughts about the sale after learning of its true significance, Bob replied “none at all.”
While many missed out on the opportunity to own a classic timepiece, no one left empty handed: As if his story weren’t epic enough, Bob chose to supplement his listing with photos of himself enjoying the watch in the company of none-other-than Mr. Christopher “Superman” Reeve.
Wow….
